I am happy to convey my experience as an old advisor working in a new independent platform.

To quote the old cliché, “it really boils down to who you know”. Through the process of getting humbled on the squash court over a 3-year period, I built a friendship with Barry Wright – an Investia branch manager in Victoria, BC and a 35-year veteran in the financial services industry. I had been an advisor and a division director with Investors Group for 14 years myself, so besides the game on the court, Barry and I also had a lot in common off the court.

In July 2013, after thoroughly researching all the available business models (bank-owned firms, insurance companies, and independent dealerships), I decided to make the change from the corporate IG model to the independent platform with Investia. Back when I started 14 years ago, I had plans of learning the ropes and building a practice then eventually going out on my own.

The Investia business model has been a very positive experience, for my clients, myself and my family. There are many things I like aside from being able to offer clients unbiased access to the universe of lower-cost mutual funds and insurance products. Having a flatter management structure creates a refreshing openness and better understanding within the organization. There is a very welcoming culture; advisors are free to leave, so the company does what it can to listen, make improvements and reduce impediments within the confines of industry compliance.
